She slipped in just as someone else was leaving.
She knew they wouldn’t let her use the key,
and looked around with pleasure at a room
so clean and fancy – a delight to see.

A basket of dried flowers on the tank
gave off the fragrance of a summer’s day.
She held them to her face, breathed in, and saw
a childhood’s field, a carefree girl at play.

Taking no time for conscience to intrude,
she scooped the petals in worn hands closed tight
and stuffed them in the pocket of her coat,
then left the room with glances left and right.

That night her park bench had a special pillow
made of her coat rolled up beneath her head.
The fragrance circled round about her dreams;
she slept upon a perfumed, silky bed.

A child, a seventeen-year-old,
was “popped,” the neighbors say.
The old game from our childhood,
“Bang, you’re dead!” is real today.

What have we done, what sin can push
our so-called human race
to such a place where life
is cheap? What leads to such disgrace?

“Blame the parents, that’s for sure!
They’re the guilty ones
whose lack of values teach the kids
to roam the streets with guns.”

But no, it’s all of us; we fail
in every chance we miss
to love; but wash our hands
and say, “I have no part of this.”

Homeless and tired

she came to the church to eat.

Turkey and stuffing

imitate a home-cooked meal;

but oh ! When can she go home?

CLOCK TOWER IN THE PARK

The clock
will still run on;
no minute lost for one
old, homeless man for whom the time
runs out.

THE ROCK

From charred
love, burnt by fear,
came the refining act
of forgiveness, on which God built
His Church.
